I started to think about public affairs in modern day where the woman has taken back her cheating husband and the power of that decision to forgive and accept his betrayal.

I've looked into the Monica Lewinsky scandal with Hilary Clinton sticking by Bill Clinton despite him first lying about the affair and then eventually publicly humiliating her, yet her remaining loyal to their marriage. Like Mary, Hillary refused to believe that Bill didn't love her.
